In the summer of 2018, Fieldform were appointed as the independent design consultants for a new build MUGA project at Newquay Tretherras School. The concept was a simple one, but the practical build solution required more detailed thought and consideration to make it viable.
Set over an existing carpark and adjoining the BAM site compound, the construction was to take place in two phases, literally splitting the new MUGA facility in half, providing each half playable over consecutive years. Beneath the MUGA was a deep SUDS storm water attenuation system, which had also to provide capacity for the MUGA facility, as well as the wider hard-surface areas of the newly developed site. This in turn produced several design challenges, having to make provision for conflicting underground services and infrastructure whilst minimising construction costs and maximising the available surface area for play.
The final design included a fully bespoke lighting system, 2m high concrete retaining wall and integrated drainage system, fencing, surfacing and sports furnishings. The project is due for completion later in the summer of 2019.
