Following a site investigation, Fieldform were recently appointed by a private client in St. Albans to transform a tired horse arena into a purpose built MUGA (multi use games area). The client’s key objective was to create a sports facility suitable for the entire family that was sympathetic to the countryside views and surrounding woodland. By working closely with the client, Fieldform were able to design a bespoke solution that provides a high-quality synthetic playing surface suitable for both football and hockey.
To ensure the new synthetic playing surface was ready for Christmas the project was split into two phases. Despite working against a restricted programme and experiencing heavy rainfall, freezing temperatures, a government lockdown and snowfall, Fieldform successfully delivered, creating a synthetic playing surface that was extensively used throughout the festive break.
Once the previous rubber and sand surface had been removed our site team utilised laser guided machinery to trim and grade the existing stone layer back into tolerance ready for the installation of a new dynamic control layer. To create a high performing and robust facility that complies with current industry guidance the aggregate sub base was constructed to a tolerance of + / – 6mm. Prior to installing the new TigerTurf synthetic playing surface a pre-formed, tile format shock pad was installed over the new dynamic sub base, this product was chosen due to previous success with other Fieldform projects.
To overcome challenging weather conditions and protect the synthetic playing surface from potential damage the bespoke fencing installation was carefully planned and executed by our highly experienced workforce. To create a safe working environment heavy duty rubber mats were installed throughout the site access and across the MUGA, this allowed for the fencing works to continue despite experiencing snow, ice and constant wet weather. The new fence was designed in partnership with JB Corrie to create a unique design utilising timber panels, jet black steelwork and heavy-duty ball stop netting. The perimeter fence was sympathetically designed to blend into the surrounding woodland whilst still offering high rebound qualities.
On completion we are very proud of this project, the new facility provides a great example of how Fieldform excel at working closely with our clients to design site specific solutions that meet budgets and exceed expectations.
Client Testimonial
“What a wonderful facility! I am delighted with the surface and the overall look of the arena. I went for wood panelling and it came out even better than I was expecting. Now everyone wants to come over and play! Many thanks to James and Richard for an excellent addition to my garden.”
