Bespoke Design & Build Solution

Following several site investigations and design meetings, Fieldform were appointed to design and construct a small-sided football facility in a residential property located on the outskirts of Poole. As an ex-professional footballer, the client wanted to install a synthetic playing surface that closely resembled natural turf without the need for using rubber granules as an infill material. Following extensive research carried out by the client within the football industry, Polytan’s non-filled LigaTurf Motion Pro turf was selected as the preferred surface.

The project had several challenges including, challenging access restricting vehicle movements to mini excavators and dumpers, no-dig requirement for a new perimeter fence, limited space and working with an existing stone raft created using shingle. By working closely with the client, housebuilder and our fencing suppliers, Fieldform were able to create a bespoke design that included the following key elements:

• No dig fencing system secured in place utilising an iron ring beam attached to a block and beam retaining structure, this innovative design enabled us to maximise the limited space available creating the larger playing surface possible
• A dynamic, unbound performance stone layer constructed over drainage crates
• Integral rebound boards built into the new fencing system maximising space and playability
• Non-filled carpet
• Recessed football goals
• Fenced fixed floodlights

Utilising the experience gained from constructing similar sports projects on roof tops we were able to construct an aggregate performance layer over a stone raft constructed by others. The stone raft was built using a clean shingle making grading and compaction extremely challenging, to overcome this we installed drainage crates and then a dynamic stone layer that was levelled to +/- 6mm under a 3m straight edge using our specialist hand pulled screed.

Prior to laying the playing surface a high performance, tile-format shock pad was installed, this product was selected due to ease of movement and the associated head fall rating. The finished facility is highly impressive and closely replicates the type of pitches normally found at commercial 5-a-side football center’s across the UK.
